Aurora is active over 300 days of the year -- BUT, it needs to be dark to see them.  This includes both once the sun has set AND getting away from the lights of the city.  Joy Alaska is 60 road miles outside of Fairbanks.  Next step is to stay awake during the peak time of activity -- which is late night here in Alaska.  Your guide will keep your mind engaged while you wait -- and help you keep an eye to the sky.
