Asilah, the first harbor of the Atlantic coast, was founded in the 8th century BC by the Phoenicians, who named the settlement Zili.
Asilah was a constant battle ground. In 1589, control passed from the Portuguese to the Spanish, who held the town for 80 years before Sultan Moulay Ismail stormed the defenses in 1691
The Spanish built a Harmonious New Town beside the Medina, from which a slowly evolving new harbor and beaches extend northwards along the coast.
