Celebrations in Tunisia

The Holy Month of Ramadan . In the holy month of Ramadan, after sunset, as people are fasting during the daytime, they break their fast by drinking water and eating dates. Then they usually drink chorba (oily spicy soup, made from meat or chicken and celeriac with pasta), an egg briq, and then couscous or pasta. After that, there comes the time for people to set talking and socializing while fruits, sweets and cakes, tea or coffee are served.

Before sunrise, sohour, which provides the energy for the whole daytime fasting, is eaten and usually comprises a light meal followed by some mesfouf, a milky couscous dessert, with dates, raisins, chopped almonds and sugar.

Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha

At the end of Ramdan, there comes Eid al-Fitr. During this three-day festival, cakes such as baklava, ghraiba made from fine semolina, or makhroud are eaten. People usually visit their relatives during this festival bearing sweets. Children are particularly happy in Eid al-Fitr as they are dressed in new clothes and enjoy outdoor trips with their families

After about 2 months and 10 days from Eid Al Fitr comes Eid al-Adha. At the beginning of the festival each family slaughters an animal and serves one third of its meat to the poor, one third for the relatives and the last third reserves for him and his family. For at least a week, meat is served in different dishes like m'rouzia, which is a stew with raisins and chestnuts, or daouara which is a sausage made of sheep liver and lungs with mint and parsley.

Ras as-Sana

It is celebrated at the first day of the lunar or Hejira year. People usually make the verdant dish of mloukhia - because the year is green. In the Nabeul region, people eat a special couscous dish called kadid which is made of salt dried meat decorated by a hard-boiled egg. They also eat sweets, dried fruit and a doll made from colored sugar.

Moulid An Nabi

On the day of Moulid an-Nabi, which commemorates Prophet Mohammed's birthday, people celebrate by eating assida in the morning. Assida comes in two versions, some people prefer the simple version made from fine semolina or flour, oil and honey while others are attracted to the more refined version of pinenuts, cream, hazelnuts, pistachios and almonds. The best quality assida can be eaten in Kairouan.
