Marvao, where this Pousada is located has been considered as a "fortified mountain stronghold" reminiscent of Obidos, but on a smaller scale and not so commercialised. Close to the Spanish border, it has been a fortress since roman times, many artefacts can still be found nearby. The 13th century walls and ramparts remain but with some 17th century modifications.

The specialty restaurant menu offers fried shrimps and mushrooms with olive oil and garlic, cod topped with cornbread, kid stew and rich egg and sugar cake with almonds.
